From 21 to 23 September, representatives from across the Horn of Africa gathered in Nairobi for a three-day workshop aimed at strengthening regional capacity to monitor, analyse and address hate speech and disinformation.
The workshop was led jointly by the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, the DPPA Innovation Cell and the Department of Peace Operations Information Integrity Unit, in partnership with the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Bringing together participants from the AU, IGAD, civil society organizations and United Nations entities working across the region, the workshop provided a platform to exchange experiences and approaches to navigating an increasingly complex information environment.
Participants examined emerging trends and challenges affecting information integrity in the Horn of Africa, including risks associated with artificial intelligence. Through practical exercises and discussions, they also strengthened skills in monitoring and analysis and explored approaches to preventing and responding effectively to hate speech and disinformation.
The workshop underscored the importance of cooperation among regional organizations, the United Nations and civil society in strengthening information integrity and supporting efforts to prevent tensions and advance peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.
