The United Nations Security Council today adopted resolution 2829 (2026), extending the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) for six months, until 31 March 2027, as gang violence continues to spread to new areas of Haiti.
The resolution was adopted by 12 votes in favour, with 3 abstentions.
The Council requested the Secretary-General to continue providing logistical and operational support to the Force through the UN Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH), and recognized the progress made by UNSOH and the Standing Group of Partners in deploying the Force.
It also emphasized that Haitian authorities have the primary responsibility for the provision of security and the protection of civilians across the country.
"This renewal gives the GSF continuity as more personnel arrive in the coming months," said Assistant Secretary-General and Head of UNSOH Daniela Kroslak. "Our job is to make sure they have what they need to undertake operations and, alongside Haitian security forces, stabilize the security situation in the country."
Keeping pace with a growing Force
UNSOH now supports over 1,500 GSF personnel. The most recent contingents, from Chad and Sri Lanka, arrived in September, and several hundred more personnel are expected in October and November.
By the end of the year, UNSOH expects to support nearly three times as many personnel as today.
From Camp Vertières, the GSF's main hub in Port-au-Prince, to its bases at the airport and near the port, UNSOH covers the Force's logistical, operational, and administrative needs, including accommodation, food, fuel, or medical care.
In August, UNSOH enabled the GSF’s first deployment outside the capital, to the Artibonite department, north of Port-au-Prince.
