The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) repulsed an attack against the civilian population in Bocaranga (Ouham–Pende) by the units of ‘Retour, Réclamation et Réhabilitation’ (3R), in the early hours of Saturday, September 23rd, 2017.
MINUSCA forces, who were patrolling in the city at the time of the attack, immediately responded and succeeded in repelling the assailants, some of whom were forced to flee into the bush, while others sought refuge in residences in the town.
During this attack, five persons were wounded one of whom remains in serious condition. All five were evacuated to the base of MINUSCA’s Bangladeshi contingent for treatment. Nearly 200 residents sought refuge near the MINUSCA base, while a MINUSCA patrol evacuated six humanitarian personnel to the Mission base.
MINUSCA’s forces have reinforced their positions in strategic locations of the city and intensified patrols throughout the city to prevent attackers from preying on civilians and further escalation of violence.
The town is currently under control of MINUSCA forces.
MINUSCA firmly condemns this violence and calls on the 3R to withdraw without delay from the recently occupied dwellings and from the city, and warns that it will not hesitate to use the force required to implement its mandate and prevent attacks on the civilian population.
MINUSCA reminds all armed groups to refrain from any actions which place the lives of civilians or humanitarian actors in danger, as is required by international humanitarian law.
