Conference Room One, UNHQ, 24 September 2026
Excellencies, distinguished colleagues,
The United Nations Support Office in Haiti, UNSOH, demonstrates the value of the UN support-office model to non-UN forces.
Since becoming operational in April, UNSOH has rapidly developed and today supports a Gang Suppression Force of nearly 1,600 personnel across multiple locations: Camp Vertières, the Force’s principal hub in Port-au-Prince; additional bases at the airport and close to the port; and in Gonaïves, where we enabled the Force’s first deployment beyond the capital.
As well as providing full mission-support services to BINUH, through bespoke arrangements we have adapted and scaled support for an expanding force while upholding applicable UN standards, including human rights safeguards.
By the end of this year, we hope to be supporting, across the capital and the country, nearly three times the number of troops currently on the ground.
With $225.7m in pledges and $194.2m in cash received, the UN Trust Fund in Support of the Force continues to provide critical resources towards these efforts, supplementing the logistical and operational support provided by UNSOH.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the 15 Member States who have contributed to the Trust Fund and encourage others to support the Force through this mechanism.
These are important steps. But the continued spread of gang violence to new locations demonstrates the scale of the challenge ahead.
As the Security Council next week considers the renewal of the mandate given to UNSOH and the Force by Resolution 2793, sustained political commitment, predictable financing, and continued contributions from Member States will be essential.
Now is the time for more international support to Haiti, not less.
Excellences,
